Takuro Goto
Born in Yamagata city, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan in 1982.
Having graduated with a bachelor's degree in Western painting, Art Department, Tohoku University of Art and Design.
I am based in Yamagata Prefecture and work as an artist. I focus on the relationships between humans and nature, Western and Eastern cultures, rural and urban areas, examining their conflicts, dominations, and harmonies from my unique perspective. Drawing inspiration from this, I engage in multifaceted expressive activities primarily through oil paintings, featuring motifs from the local landscape such as abandoned houses, snow fences, and new year fire ritual.

The small town where I live.
Snow piles up, the houses slowly lean, the number of people dwindles, and a soundless landscape is all that remains. Yet within that “ruin” and “decline” I feel a kind of beauty—perhaps the air of a land that calmly accepts the quiet loss of things.
I mainly paint oils on canvas stretched over wooden frames.
It is the most archetypal, Western‑derived form of painting, but I treat it by breaking, scratching, and weathering it. I stretch the cloth and paint, then peel it off and sand it, stretch it again and paint again, letting holes appear without concern, gradually blending the picture with the surrounding space.
I am not tightly bound to the idea of completion. If the work rots or discolors, that is fine. Even the changes that come with time feel honest to me, because the piece is an object born of this place.
Inside me mingle the Western painting I studied, the local faith rooted here, East‑Asian culture, and the post‑war Americanized Japanese society—a twisted sense of modernity in layers. Rather than separating them, I paint with everything left tangled and messy; that feels natural to me now.
I no longer know whether this can even be called “art.” Precisely because of that uncertainty, I want to keep watching what my expression is and why I keep painting here like this.Together with the damp air of this place, its silences, and the things that have been carried away.

後藤 拓朗（ごとう たくろう）
1982年山形市生まれ。東北芸術工科大学洋画コースで絵画を学ぶ。山形県を拠点に活動。人間と自然、西洋と東洋、地方と都市といった関係性に着目し、それらの対立や支配や融和について独自の視点から考察する。それをもとに、廃屋や「雪囲い」「ヤハハエロ」といった郷土の風物をモチーフとして、油彩画を中心に多面的に表現している。
― 作品について ―
私が住む小さな町。
雪が降り積もり、家は少しずつ傾き、ひとの数は減り、音のない風景だけが残っていく。でも私は、その「滅び」や「衰退」の中に、ひとつの美しさがあるように感じています。それは、何かが失われていくことを静かに受け入れる、そんな土地の空気かもしれません。

私は主に、木枠に張ったキャンバスに油彩画を制作しています。
もっとも典型的な西洋由来の絵画形式。私はそれを、壊したり、傷つけたり、風化させたりしながら使っています。布を張って描いて、剥がして削り、また張り直し描いて、穴があいても気にせず、少しずつ絵と空間を混ぜていきます。
完成という考え方にもあまりとらわれていません。そのまま腐ったり、変色したりしてもいい。時間とともに作品が変わっていくことさえも、この土地で生まれた物体として正直だと思うのです。

私の中には、西洋絵画を学んだこと、地域に根付いた信仰、東洋的な文化、そして戦後のアメリカナイズされた日本社会というように、ねじれた近代の感覚が入り混じっています。それらを分けて考えずに、混ぜたまま、ぐしゃぐしゃのまま描くこと。それがいまの自分にとって自然な表現です。

これが「美術」といえるのかどうか、もはやわかりません。でも、だからこそ自分の表現が何なのか、なぜここでこうして描くのか、それを見つめ続けていたいと思っています。
